Iran – Middle East conflict visa information

Smartraveller travel advice

There have been military strikes in the Middle East and there is a risk of ongoing attacks and escalation across the region. Local security situations could get worse quickly. Flight cancellations and disruptions continue with little or no notice, including due to airport and airspace closures -– you should depart when it's safe to do so. The Australian Government may not be able to assist with your departure.

If you're an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or immediate family member who has the right of entry to Australia (i.e. a valid visa), you can also register on DFAT’s crisis registration portal.

Check the Middle East travel advice page on the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) Smartraveller for the most up-to-date information for the region.

To get email updates on travel advice, Australians should also subscribe to Smartraveller.

If you need urgent consular help, call DFAT’s 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on +61 2 6261 3305 from overseas or 1300 555 135 in Australia.

Applying for a visa

You can apply for an Australian visa online through ImmiAccount. Do not visit an Embassy or Home Affairs office to lodge a visa application.

If you need help to apply for a visa see Who can help you with your application. If someone in Iran needs help applying, an Australian family member or friend can apply online for them, with their permission and details.

You will need a passport, but if you do not have one, give us your ID and information so we can help you to find other options.

For assistance with migration agent appointments, you can access our Translating and Interpreting Service.

Please note: visa processing for people in Iran is currently limited, and delays are expected. The department is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updated advice as required.

Meeting visa requirements

You must meet all legal requirements before we can grant you a visa. It is important that full visa assessments are undertaken. This helps keep Australian communities safe and protects the integrity of Australia’s border processes.

Some people may need health checks or have biometrics collected. If these are needed, we cannot grant the visa until they have been completed. A list of biometric collection centres and panel doctors are available on the department’s Offices and locations page. However, the department understands that some Australian biometrics collection centres or panel doctors may close suddenly.

If you already applied

We understand some people  cannot send us all required documents right now. However, we cannot finalise a visa unless all legal requirements are met. Processing applications for people in Iran may take longer at this time.

Afghans living in Iran should check the Afghanistan update page for more information on requirements for visa applications.

Extending your stay in Australia

If the situation has affected you and your family and you want to stay longer in Australia, you may be able to apply for another visa. Options include skilled, family, student and visitor visas.

You must stay lawful in Australia and apply for a new visa before your current visa expires.

Check your visa expiry date and visa conditions in:

You can download the free myVEVO app from the Apple and Google app stores.

If you have a ‘no further stay’ condition (8503, 8534, 8535 or 8540) on your current visa, you can make a no Further Stay waiver request.

Children travelling with one parent

Australia commits to ensuring the welfare of children. To travel to Australia, a minor must have permission from both parents.

If you cannot give us this consent, you can apply with available documentation. We will contact you to discuss your application.
