Gavan Reynolds was sworn-in as Commissioner of the Australian Border Force and Comptroller-General of Customs on 10 November 2024, where he is responsible for the effective management of goods and people across the border.
Gavan joined the Royal Military College in 1984 and served in the Australian Army for 40 years. He commanded at the unit and brigade level in addition to numerous staff and training postings throughout his military career. Gavan served on operations in Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf.
He attended staff college in Australia in addition to the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies in 2010 and the Higher Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom in 2013.
Gavan was promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed the inaugural Chief of Defence Intelligence, responsible for the Defence Intelligence Group from 2020 to July 2024.
In recognition of his "exceptional service" to intelligence and career management he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010. Gavan was advanced to Officer of the Order of Australia in 2022 in recognition of his "exceptional leadership in successive significant appointments"; namely as Australian Military Representative to NATO, Head Military Strategic Plans, and Chief of Defence Intelligence.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography with Honours, a Master of Defence Studies, and a Master of Business Administration.
