English, as our national language, connects us together and is an important unifying element of Australian society. English language proficiency is a key contributor to better educational and employment outcomes and social participation levels.
The Australian Government, through the Department of Home Affairs, funds a free service to help eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants with low English levels to improve their English language skills and settle into Australia. The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is delivered across Australia in metropolitan, regional and rural locations. The AMEP was reformed in 2021 and now more people can learn English for longer and until they reach a higher level of proficiency.
