The Department of Home Affairs is working in partnership with CSIRO’s Data61 to develop a Voluntary Data Classification Framework (the framework). This project is a key measure under the 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy.
Overview
Robust cyber security arrangements are linked to an organisation’s understanding of the nature of data it holds and the potential threats it faces. The development of a voluntary data classification framework will help Australian industry assess and classify data in a systematic and consistent way.
The framework will be underpinned by extensive research into the broader data risk management landscape. It will incorporate information we collect through consultation with industry stakeholders and Commonwealth agencies.
Developing the framework will offer several benefits to industry. This includes enhancing security controls that are proportionate to the value, importance and sensitivity of the data. It will empower industry to bolster their data security posture and strengthen data governance approaches. This will reduce barriers and build consumer trust when sharing data.
The framework will be interoperable with existing policies and legislation. This includes the Protective Security Policy Framework, which applies to Australian Government entities.
