I wanted to work at Home Affairs because I wanted to do something to give back to my country and what better place than the Department that is responsible for who enters, and the security of those within.

You get extensive development throughout the graduate program, mentoring and network activities with various high ranking staff as well as a permanent role. Why not apply to a place that is the heartbeat of the countries safety and contribute to work that is directly impacting the lives of every Australian. With such a reach and breadth in Department activities, you could find yourself doing a range of different tasks, within each rotation you find yourself in. So consider whether that is something you are interested in, and then if it is, apply!

Home Affairs is such an interesting and dynamic department. I was attracted to the national security and multicultural and international work of the department because of my academic background in these areas.

The program connected me to so many people in my office and I quickly felt more at home as I settled into my first year with Home Affairs. I’m still in contact with people I met from my various rotations and it’s so lovely to see familiar faces all through the office.

Being a graduate will change and challenge you, and you will make so many new connections which will set you up for a successful career in the department and beyond. I highly recommend applying!

I was drawn to the Home Affairs Graduate Program because it offers an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience within one of the most complex and dynamic departments in government.

If you're looking for the best possible way to launch your career, this is it. You could start in a single role and spend years figuring out your next step, or you could join the graduate program and gain experience across 4–5 different teams, helping you discover what excites you most. The Department is vast, with teams across Australia and the world, giving you exposure to complex and meaningful work that directly impacts the lives of Australians.

I wish more people knew just how much real responsibility and impact graduates can have during the program. You’re not just shadowing others—you’re actively working on projects that shape the Department and influence national policies.

Karuna Testimonials

Karuna

Home Affairs is one of the biggest Departments in the Australian Public Service, with one of the broadest remits to match its size. I was excited to get exposure to so many business areas like Immigration, Cyber, National Security and the Border Force.

If you are interested in the graduate program, I would suggest reading up on the department’s main functions and what resources they may have published on their progress and deliverables.

Throughout the program you will have multiple rotations into different business areas, enabling you to see each team cycle through different priorities. The program does a great job of putting into perspective all that fits in a year.
