The Australian Government is funding a range of new multicultural grants to help address Islamophobia.
These grants are part of the Australian Government response to the recommendations made by Australia’s Special Envoy to combat Islamophobia. They include a number of new multicultural grants programs to increase education and awareness around Muslim identity, support inter-community, inter-culture and inter-faith understanding, and build the wellbeing, leadership and capability of Muslims and Muslim organisations, with a specific focus on Muslim women and youth. The three key focus areas are:
- Education and awareness
- Protection and support
- Building social cohesion
Funding will be delivered through a mix of open-competitive, targeted or restricted competitive and closed non-competitive grant opportunities. Information about eligibility and application processes will be published as each grant opens.
Education and awareness
Funding will support the following grant opportunities:
- an open-competitive grant round to establish a research institute on Australian Muslim affairs to support well-informed dialogue and decision making.
- a closed non-competitive grant to facilitate greater understanding of the values, histories and contributions of Muslims to Australian society.
Protection and support
Funding will support the following grant opportunities:
- an open-competitive grant round to enhance economic participation and leadership capacity for Australian Muslim women through grassroots organisation-led programs.
- an open-competitive grant round to provide leadership and capacity support to enhance societal outcomes for Australian Muslim youth through Muslim community organisations.
- a targeted or restricted competitive grant round to enhance the governance, capacity and advocacy capabilities of Muslim Australian community organisations
- a targeted or restricted competitive grant round to enable selection of a third party with experience and knowledge of Islamic cultural art to provide funding directly to young Australian Muslim creatives to produce and disseminate contemporary stories.
- a closed non-competitive grant to develop and deliver an integrated Youth Development Program that provides structured, culturally responsive early intervention programs.
- a closed non-competitive grant to enhance economic participation and leadership capacity for Australian Muslim women.
- a closed non-competitive grant to conduct intensive engagement and community outreach, and provide culturally competent mental health and wellbeing support for Australian Muslim youth.
Building social cohesion
Funding will support the following grant opportunities:
- an open-competitive grant round to enable Australian Muslim organisations to deliver events that foster cross cultural interactions and to host international events that foster greater connection with Muslim countries.
- a closed non-competitive grant to deliver sporting events that support cross-cultural engagement for Australian Muslim youth.
Grant applications
