Information in other languages

Community Information - Hamas-Israel Conflict - Arabic / معلومات للمجتمع: الصراع بين إسرائيل وحماس

The Department of Home Affairs recognises there are communities in Australia who are deeply affected by the Hamas attacks on Israel and the continuing conflict.

We understand media reporting and personal stories about the conflict may impact on Australians, particularly communities of Jewish, Palestinian, and broader Middle Eastern and Muslim identity.

Australia is a diverse society with a rich Indigenous heritage and a successful migration history. We respect the right for anyone in Australia to protest peacefully, but violence will not be tolerated. There is no place in Australia for prejudice or hatred of any kind.

We encourage you to contact authorities for help and advice if you have concerns an individual or group may plan to engage in violent activity.

Reporting incidences of violence or other hate-related crimes

You can report incidents of hate crime or violence to state and territory police by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visiting the Crime Stoppers website.

You can report possible signs of terrorism in the community to the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400. This includes terrorist and violent extremist content online.

In an emergency or life-threatening situation, contact Triple Zero (000).

Reporting violent, distressing or harmful online material

The eSafety Commissioner’s website has helpful resources on reporting distressing content. It also provides information on parental controls for social media, games and apps on devices. This assists parents concerned for their children’s online wellbeing.

The eSafety Commissioner’s offers the following advice to anyone who sees violent, distressing or harmful material online:

  • Don't share it further – even if your intention is to help or raise awareness, you may cause distress to others.
  • Report it to the platform to help get the material removed quickly.
  • If the material is not removed, or if it's seriously harmful, you can report it to eSafety. (eSafety can notify the platform to either remove the content or block access from within Australia).
  • Report terrorist and extreme/violent content to the National Security Hotline by calling 1800 123 400.

For more information visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website.
