Foreign interference and espionage threaten Australia’s sovereignty, democracy, values, and national interests.
The Government established the Technology Foreign Interference Taskforce (TechFIT) to help combat these threats, as announced in the 2024-25 Budget. TechFIT brings together Australian Government and industry stakeholders to safeguard Australia’s technology, intellectual property, and innovations.
TechFIT will enable ongoing dialogue between government and industry. This will help identify, mitigate, and prevent acts of foreign interference and espionage.
The initiative is a key element of the Government’s broader efforts to combat foreign interference threats. Learn more at Countering Foreign Interference in Australia: Working towards a more secure Australia.
The threat
Australia has a thriving technology industry. Advanced technologies, like artificial intelligence, quantum and biotechnology, deliver significant benefits and opportunities. The success and opportunities within this sector make Australia an attractive target for foreign interference and espionage.
Foreign interference and espionage can serve foreign military, political and economic interests and provide adversaries with a strategic advantage. This threatens Australia’s economic and national security and the commercial viability of Australian enterprises.
Without appropriate safeguards, Australia’s technology industry is vulnerable to this threat.
What TechFIT will do
Australia’s best defence against foreign interference and espionage in the technology industry is to provide industry with the information they need to recognise it, report it, and build long-term resilience against it.
TechFIT will raise awareness and build resilience in the Australian technology industry against foreign interference and espionage threats. This includes:
- identifying industry needs
- coordinating government outreach efforts
- developing guidance and products to help industry protect itself.
