Voluntary Code of Practice for App Store Operators and App Developers

We commit to ensuring Australians can trust that their digital products are safe, secure and suitable. This forms part of the deliverables under the 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy. Following international best practice is important for protecting users from cyber risks in everyday technologies and ensuring consistent improvements.

Applications (apps) are a type of software that Australians use daily for services and communication. Improving app security is an opportunity to raise the standard of cyber security across the economy. This will extend cyber security protections to more users and combine our ongoing vision to be a world-leading cyber secure nation by with recent efforts to improve cyber security across smart products.

To support this, the department created an approach that meets international best practice, recognising the United Kingdom’s Voluntary Code of Practice for App Store Operators and App Developers. The government carried out targeted consultation on Voluntary Guidance for App Store Operators and App Developers in Australia, which closed on 11 July 2025. Read more about the consultation process and the finalised Code of Practice.
