Industry Data Classification Framework

The Industry Data Classification Framework (IDCF) helps organisations sort and manage data in a consistent way. It is a voluntary framework, with simple steps. It will help you assess what type of data your organisation holds, and how to store, share and protect it.

The framework supports organisations that want to work with data in a safe and trusted way. Shaped by industry feedback, the IDCF reflects real‑world needs and challenges. It provides a common approach across sectors, making it easier for organisations to work together and understand each other’s data practices.

You can use the IDCF whether your organisation is large or small. It uses common terms and clear guidance that can be applied in many settings. It is designed so you can apply the parts that work for you and your organisation.

The framework contains 4 key modules:

  • Introduction
  • Risk assessment
  • Data Security Levels (DSLs)
  • Markers
