Service locations

​The Australian Consulate in Sofia has no visa function.  The Department's office in Belgrade, Serbia, manages visa and citizenship services for clients in Bulgaria.

Australian Embassy



This office provides immigration and visa services to clients in Serbia and five other European countries including: Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia (Former Yugoslav Republic of), Montenegro and Romania.

If you are currently residing in Kosovo, you can lodge your applications in Belgrade or at the Australian Embassy, Vienna.

If you are currently residing in Greece and you are an Albanian citizen, you can lodge your applications at Belgrade or at the Australian Embassy, Berlin​.​

Payment​ information

Credit card is the preferred payment option.

Credit Card​

Payments using credit card will be processed in Australian dollars (AUD). We accept MasterCard, Visa, AMEX, Diners and JCB. When paying by a credit card you may incur a credit card surcharge, banking and currency conversion fees and you will need to accept the risk associated with any currency fluctuations.​​​​​

Prior to lodging your application, you may need to notify your bank of an upcoming foreign credit card transaction. Failure to do so may result in your transaction being declined. Without payment your application is invalid.

Credit card transactions processed in Australian dollars (AUD) are processed in Australia.​​​​​ A credit card surcharge may apply to transactions made using your credit card.

​Making payment in Australia

Fees may be paid​ at any of our offi​ces in Australia. Once the fee has been paid, you will need to provide a copy of the receipt with your application.​​​


Applications for Citizenship by Descent are processed by the Australian High Commission in London.​​

​Applications for Australian citizenship general eligibility and other situations, and applications to resume or renounce (give up) Australian citizenship should be lodged at the Canberra Visa and Citizenship office in Australian Capital Territory​.

Visa labels​

You need to have a valid visa to travel to Australia. We do not need you to have a visa label placed into your passport for travel to Australia. This is known as 'label-free' travel, making travel to Australia simpler and more secure.

Relevant document: ‘Conviction Status Certificate’ (Svidetelstvo za Sudimost).
Resident citizens: Apply in person at the Regional Court where you are registered (under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice).
Non-resident citizens: Apply at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. You may also authorise a representative in Bulgaria, with a power of attorney or a certificate of inheritor, to apply for and receive the certificate on your behalf.
Provide: an application form (available at http://www.justice.government.bg), identity document, birth certificate, power of attorney and/or certificate of inheritors when a certificate is requested on your behalf, and legal proof of name change, if applicable.
