Travel tips

Security measures are in place to protect you and to make sure you have a secure travel experience when travelling throughout Australia's airports. Here are some tips to help you get through airport security quickly and efficiently:

  • Know what you can and cannot take in your carry-on or checked baggage. Restrictions include prohibited items, weapons and dangerous goods.
  • You can also check the Can I pack that? dangerous goods app to see if an item can be packed in your baggage. If you are still unsure if an item will be permitted, either leave it at home or contact your airline.
  • If travelling internationally or departing from an international terminal, check Australia's powder, liquid, aerosol and gel quantity restrictions before you pack your carry-on baggage. There are certain exemptions from these restrictions, such as medication, medical devices and aids, and baby products.
  • As security laws vary from country to country, you should familiarise yourself with the security laws of the country you are travelling to by referring to the Smartravellerwebsite.

At the airport

  • Understand the passenger screening process to help make your passage through the security screening point fast and efficient.
  • Carefully packing bags at home and carrying only essential items in hand luggage.
  • Cooperate with the requests and directions of security screening officers, and airport and airline officials.
  • Pack liquid, aerosol and gel items in a clear, transparent and re-sealable bag, where the four sides of the bag add up to no more than 80 centimetres.
  • Separate all powder items into a tray at the screening point.
  • Do not make jokes about bombs, firearms or other weapons.
  • Do not behave in an aggressive or threatening manner.
  • Do not leave your luggage unattended.
  • Speak to your airline or airport security manager if you see anything suspicious or may cause harm to an airport, airline, airport worker or a fellow traveller.
