In Australia, responsibility for firearm matters is shared between the Commonwealth and state and territory governments.
The Department of Home Affairs grants permission to import certain types of firearms and firearm-related articles under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956.
National Firearms Agreement
On 26 August 2026, National Cabinet agreed to an updated 2026 National Firearms Agreement. The changes include:
- sharing Commonwealth criminal intelligence with states and territories
- making Australian citizenship a condition of holding a firearms license, subject to agreed exceptions, and
- prohibiting the manufacture of 3D-printed firearms, and the possession and distribution of material for manufacturing 3D firearms.
The 2026 National Firearms Agreement constitutes a national approach to firearms regulation in Australia.
