On 21 May 2017 the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection announced that illegal maritime arrivals (IMAs) must lodge their Temporary Protection visa (TPV) or Safe Haven Enterprise visa (SHEV) application before 1 October 2017.
This deadline has now passed.
IMAs who did not lodge an application for a Temporary Protection visa (TPV) or Safe Haven Enterprise visa (SHEV) before 1 October:
- are now barred from applying for any type of temporary or permanent visa in Australia
- will no longer have access to support services other than permission to work, Medicare and education for school age children
- must make arrangements to leave Australia.
