Permanent entry visas
Partner, prospective marriage and child visa applications from applicants generally living in one of the countries in country coverage list above are lodged and processed in Washington.
Applications for general skilled, business innovation and investment, Distinguished Talent (subclass 124), Former Resident (subclass 151) and parent subclasses are lodged and processed in Australia.
Refugee and Humanitarian visas
Applications for a Refugee and Humanitarian (Class XB) visa accompanied by a proposal form (form 681) should be lodged at the Special Humanitarian Processing Centre in Sydney.
This applies to people who are lodging a visa application for consideration under the Global Special Humanitarian Program (SHP) or as an immediate family member.
Lodging Certain Humanitarian Applications in Australia
All other Refugee and Humanitarian applications should be directed to the closest
immigration office outside Australia.
Temporary entry visas
Passport holders from the USA and a range of other countries are eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) online, through a travel agent or airline.
Electronic Travel Authority – Online Applications
Passport holders from the USA who want to visit Australia for more than three months are eligible to apply online for a
Tourist visa (e600).
Passport holders from the USA are eligible to apply online for a
Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462).
Residents of the USA, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands applying for a Transit visa need to submit their application to our office in
Passport holders from the USA and all nationals residing in the USA are eligible to apply online for a
Student visa applicants who are generally living in the USA should submit their application to the
Australian High Commission, Ottawa.
Unless indicated below, other temporary entry visa applications from applicants generally living in one of the countries in country coverage list above are lodged and processed in Washington.
Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (subclass 400) - Visa applicants will need to lodge an online application
Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403) - Sponsorship (if required) and visa applicants can lodge an online application.
Training visa (subclass 407) - Sponsorship, nomination and visa applications will need to lodge an online application.
Temporary Work Activity visa (subclass 408) - Sponsorship and visa applications will need to lodge an online application.
Paper applications for the Sponsored Family stream of the Visitor (subclass 600) visa must be lodged in Australia. These applications will be processed at one of the Sponsored Family Visitor processing centres below.

Temporary Work (Skilled) (subclass 457) sponsorship, nomination and visa applications must be lodged online. These applications will be processed at one of the Centres of Excellence in Australia.
If you are sponsored by an Australian employer, you must lodge your visa application at the same office in Australia where your employer lodged papers to support your application. Please ask your employer where they lodged these papers.
Applications for Citizenship by Descent can be lodged at the Australian Embassy, Washington.
Applications for Australian citizenship general eligibility and other situations, and applications to resume or renounce (give up) Australian citizenship should be lodged at the
Canberra office in Australian Capital Territory.
