Evidence of Immigration Status ImmiCard
Evidence of Immigration Status ImmiCard is issued to:
- holders of the following visa subclasses:
- subclass 050 or 051 Bridging visa E granted to Illegal Maritime Arrivals
- subclass 070 Bridging (removal pending) visa
- subclass 449 Humanitarian Stay (temporary) visa holders
- subclass 785 Temporary Protection visa
- subclass 786 Temporary (humanitarian concern) visa
- subclass 790 Safe Haven Enterprise visa
- subclass 866 Permanent Protection visa.
- undocumented immigration detainees living in the community who do not have a visa
- previous holders of Documents For Travel To Australia (DFTTA) or Visa Evidence Cards (PLO56) as a replacement of their paper documents
- permanent residents who do not have, or cannot use or obtain, a passport and are unable to use the VEVO system.
Australian Migration Status ImmiCard
Australian Migration Status (AMS) ImmiCards are issued mainly to Refugee and Special Humanitarian Programme (RSHP) visa holders. They are also used by a small number of other visa holders who do not have, or cannot obtain, a passport recognised by the Australian Government.
The AMS ImmiCard is an official International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) compliant Travel Document issued offshore, allowing visa holders to travel to and enter Australia for the first time.
In Australia it is used as an official COI document that can be verified to access government services.

From 1 July 2017 the Permanent Residence Evidence ImmiCard will no longer be issued. Permanent Protection visa holders will be able to order an
Evidence of Immigration Status ImmiCard online when their visa is granted.

Residence Determination ImmiCard
From 1 July 2017 the Residence Determination ImmiCard will no longer be issued. Immigration detainees living in the community who do not have a visa will be issued with an Evidence of Immigration Status ImmiCard.

verified online. The Residence Determination ImmiCard records a card holder's claimed identity at the time of issue.
Purpose of the ImmiCard
Everyone who visits or lives in Australia needs to be able to prove who they are. To access government services, agencies are required under the
National Identity Proofing Guidelines to check a person’s COI using online verification systems. For non-citizens, most people present their passport to do this.
The ImmiCard is an official COI document that can be used as an alternative option for people who do not have, or cannot use or obtain, a passport. The ImmiCard can assist card holders to establish their identity or to prove their visa status in Australia. ImmiCards are issued in place of the following documents no longer issued by the Department:
- Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status
- Document for Travel to Australia (DFTTA)
- Visa Evidence Card (PLO56).
Checking an ImmiCard holder's visa status
Details shown on the ImmiCard allow visa holders and registered Australian organisations to check visa status and conditions through the VEVO system.
VEVO is a free online service that gives visa holders, employers and other registered organisations easy and quick access to visa status and conditions 24 hours a day.
ImmiCards issued to immigration detainees living in the community are not verifiable through VEVO because community detainees do not have an Australian visa.
Validating ImmiCard details
ImmiCards can be verified through the
Document Verification Service (DVS). This is a secure, national, real-time online system that allows Australian government agencies and registered organisations to confirm that the ImmiCard has not been cancelled and that the identity details on the card match records held by the Department.
ImmiCards are issued with a 3 year expiry date. The expiry date is not linked to the card holder's visa. Expired ImmiCards can still be used after the expiry date to verify visa status through VEVO or the Document Verification Service. However, clients are able to replace their expired card online.

Correcting the personal information on an ImmiCard
If an ImmiCard holder believes the personal information on their ImmiCard is incorrect, card holders can request the Department to correct it.

ImmiCard fees and charges
Anyone who is granted a Humanitarian visa will receive their first ImmiCard free of charge. Unaccompanied Minors are also exempt from any ImmiCard fees.
If you believe the information on your ImmiCard is incorrect and the Department agrees to correct your personal details, a replacement ImmiCard will be issued free of charge.
