Kenya - Visa information and lodgement

This visa office provide immigration and visa services to clients in Kenya and 21 other countries in East, Central and West Africa including: Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Republic of Congo, Republic of South Sudan, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda.

Biometrics collection

Applicants in Kenya, Ethiopia and Ghana, regardless of nationality, lodging paper-based visa applications need to attend an Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC) in person to lodge their application and provide their biometrics. A 10 digit fingerprint scan and a facial photograph will be collected.

Applicants in Uganda, regardless of nationality, lodging paper-based visa applications might need to attend the Australian Biometric Collection Centre (ABCC) in Kampala in person to provide their biometrics. A 10 digit fingerprint scan and a facial photograph will be collected.

Applicants in Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda, regardless of nationality, lodging their visa application online might be sent a letter informing them that they need to attend the AVAC or ABCC in person to provide their biometrics.

Note:

  • Applicants lodging applications for Resident Return and Citizenship by Descent do not have to provide biometrics.
  • Clients in Kenya lodging applications for Refugee and Humanitarian applications should lodge their application at the Australian High Commission in Kenya.

Lodging a visa application

At an Australian Visa Application Centre

The Department has an agreement with Teleperformance to provide Australian visa lodgement services for people in Kenya, Ethiopia and Ghana through Australian Visa Application Centres. The AVAC accepts applications for Australian visas. Clients can lodge their applications in person through theAVAC in Kenya, Ethiopia and Ghana.
Note: The AVAC do not accept couriered or posted applications.

By post or courier to the Australian High Commission

Please ensure you have enclosed the appropriate visa application charge. Sponsors can also pay at any department office in Australia and you can include the official receipt with your application.

Note: Clients in Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda lodging applications directly with the Australian High Commission might still need to go to the AVAC or ABCC to provide biometrics.

Exception: Clients in Kenya lodging applications for Resident Return visas, Australian Declaratory visas, Citizenship by Descent and Refugee and Humanitarian visas.

At the Australian High Commission in person

To lodge in person at the Australian High Commission you will need to make an appointment. Appointments are made by email or by calling the Australian High Commission.

Note: Clients in Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda lodging applications directly with the Australian High Commission might still need to go to the AVAC or ABCC to provide biometrics.

Exception: Clients in Kenya lodging applications for Resident Return visas, Australian Declaratory visas, Citizenship by Descent and Refugee and Humanitarian visas.

Permanent entry visas

Partner, prospective marriage and child visa applications from applicants usually living in one of the countries in country coverage list above are processed in Nairobi.

Applications for general skilled, business innovation and investment, Distinguished Talent (subclass 124), Former Resident (subclass 151) and parent subclasses are lodged and processed in Australia.

Refugee and Humanitarian visas

Clients from Africa whose application for a Refugee and Humanitarian (Class XB) visa is accompanied by a proposal form (form 681) must lodge their application at the department’s NSW Offshore Humanitarian Processing Centre.

This applies to people who are lodging a visa for consideration under the Global Special Humanitarian Program (SHP) or as an immediate family member.

All other Refugee and Humanitarian applications should be directed to the Australian High Commission, Kenya.

Temporary entry visas

Student visa applications

Student visa applications from clients in Africa are lodged and processed at the Africa Student Hub, Australian High Commission, Pretoria.

Some African nationals may apply online for a Student visa.

If you are not eligible to apply for a Student visa online, you will need to lodge a paper application with the Africa Student Hub Pretoria. Please ensure you have enclosed the appropriate visa application charge.

Exception: Clients lodging student applications in Kenya, Ethiopia or Ghana.

Biometrics and clients lodging student applications in Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda

Clients in Kenya, Ethiopia and Ghana, regardless of nationality, lodging paper-based student visa applications,might need to attend an AVAC in Kenya, Ethiopia or Ghana in person, to lodge their application and provide their biometrics. All student visa applications lodged in Kenya, Ethiopia and Ghana will be transferred from the AVAC to the Africa Student Hub Pretoria for processing.

Clients in Uganda, regardless of nationality, lodging paper-based student visa applications at the Africa Student Hub Pretoria, might need to attend the ABCC in Kampala and provide their biometrics.

Other temporary entry visa applications

The information below gives the lodgement arrangements for temporary entry visas. For more detailed information refer to the relevant subclass visa pages on how to apply.

Unless indicated below, other temporary entry visa applications from countries in the country coverage list above are lodged and processed in Nairobi.

Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (subclass 400) - Visa applicants will need to lodge an online application

Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403) - Sponsorship (if required) and visa applicants can lodge an online application.

Training visa (subclass 407) - Sponsorship, nomination and visa applications will need to lodge an online application.

Temporary Work Activity visa (subclass 408) - Sponsorship and visa applications will need to lodge an online application.

Paper applications for the Sponsored Family stream of the Visitor (subclass 600) visa must be lodged in Australia. These applications will be processed at one of the Sponsored Family Visitor processing centres below.

Temporary Work (Skilled) (subclass 457)​ sponsorship, nomination and visa applications must be lodged online. These applications will be processed at one of the Centres of Excellence in Australia.

If you are sponsored by an Australian employer, you must lodge your visa application at the same office in Australia where your employer lodged papers to support your application. Please ask your employer where they lodged these papers.​​​​​

Citizenship

Applications for Citizenship by Descent can be lodged at the Australian High Commission, Kenya.

Exception: Clients in Ethiopia and Ghana can lodge Citizenship by Descent applications at the AVAC.

Applications for Australian citizenship general eligibility and other situations, and applications to resume or renounce (give up) Australian citizenship should be lodged at the Canberra office in Australian Capital Territory.
